Community Services Receives Donation of Van

Anonymous benefactors donate van to Ride Share Program 
 
(Bel Air, MD) - - Several generous community members anonymously donated a van to the Department of Community Services’ Getting There Ride Share Program.  The donation helps the program’s goal of erasing isolation and improving the quality of life for Harford County’s age-eligible seniors, especially in the more remote areas of the county. The Getting There Ride Share program serves seniors age 60 years and older residing in Harford County, primarily in the rural areas of Whiteford, Street, Darlington/Dublin, Pylesville, and Jarrettsville. Read more...

Office on Aging Offers Yoga and Zumba Summer Classes at Satellite Location in Norrisville

(Bel Air, MD) - - The Harford County Office on Aging within the Department of Community Services announced the Norrisville Recreation Center as a new satellite location for senior fitness programming. 
 
This summer, the Harford County Office on Aging will offer Yoga, Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold Toning classes at the Norrisville Recreation Center, located at 5310 Norrisville Road in White Hall, Maryland. First Maryland Influenza Case of 2013-14 Flu Season Confirmed

School Vaccination Outreach Enters Eighth Year 
 
Bel Air, MD –- According to a news release from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (MD DHMH), seasonal influenza has officially arrived in Maryland with the first laboratory-confirmed case. It was identified in a child from the National Capital Region who was briefly hospitalized but is recovering.  The flu strain detected was type A (H1N1) influenza protection against which this year’s seasonal flu vaccine provides protection. Libraries Serve as “Cooling Centers” as Heat Index Approaches 105 Degrees

High temperatures trigger need for Cooling Centers 
 
(Forest Hill, MD) - - With high temperatures and heat index expected to reach nearly 105 degrees,  the Harford County Department of Emergency Services, in cooperation with Harford County Public Library and the Harford County Health Department will use libraries as “Cooling Centers” throughout the county.
 
All Harford County Public Libraries will serve as “Cooling Centers” for public use during normal business hours from Tuesday, July 16 through Friday, July 19. Read more...

Harford County Department of Community Services Recognizes Volunteers

(Bel Air, MD) – The Harford County Department of Community Services’ Office on Aging honored volunteers during the annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at the McFaul Activity Center in Bel Air. 
 
More than 120 volunteers were recognized for donating over 6,400 hours of service to the six senior activity centers and the Office on Aging in 2012. Read more...

(Bel Air, MD) - - The 2013 “Caring for Those Who Care” Conference and Resource Fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Veronica “Roni” Chenowith Activity Center in Fallston. The event, which is free of charge, is sponsored by the Harford County Geriatric Assistance and Information Network (G.A.I.N.) in cooperation with the Harford County Office on Aging.

Seniors Receive Fresh Produce through Innovative Partnership

(Bel Air, MD) - - The Harford County Department of Community Services, Office on Aging, in cooperation with the Office of the County Executive, Division of Agriculture, has created a viable option for eligible seniors to access locally grown fresh produce over the summer months. Harford County receives both state-sponsored as well as county-sponsored coupons; Harford County is one of the few counties that offer this to seniors. The coupons are good from July 1st-October 31st (county) and through November 30th (state). These coupons are distributed to eligible seniors, age 60+, based upon their proximity to the local farmers markets. Read more...

Libraries Help Harford Residents Beat the Heat

(Belcamp, MD) With recent temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, many residents are stopping by the branches of Harford County Public Library (HCPL), which have been designated as official cooling centers for Harford County. Also serving as a place for those still without power to use the computers, charge cell phones and ride out the heat wave, many HCPL staff have set up areas for games and other fun indoor activities to stay cool. Winter Reading Program 2012 at the Library

O’ Say Can You Read a Good Book? Our star-spangled 2012 Winter Reading Program theme commemorates the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the role that Maryland played in this historic event.

Beginning January 3rd adults and teens may register at any branch and receive a commemorative pen. Adults who read or listen to at least five books and teens who read or listen to at least three books may return their completed book list between January 10th and March 3rd to receive a commemorative mug. Harford Transit Link Helping Celebrate Harford’s Veterans

(Bel Air, MD) - - Harford Transit LINK, will be providing a free shuttle bus service for the Veteran’s Day event at the Liriodendron Mansion, 502 West Gordon Street, Bel Air, on Saturday, November 12. Area Seniors Donate Handmade Quilts to Help Those in Need

(Aberdeen, MD) - - Participants in the Aberdeen Senior Activity Center’s Quilting Project recently donated their handmade quilts to Alliance, Inc., a non-profit agency offering a wide array of services tailored to the specific needs and wishes of people with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and substance abuse problems.
