Hickory Fifth Graders Raise Money for New Jersey School

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the fifth grade students at Hickory Elementary School decided to reach out to one of the hardest-hit areas – New Jersey – to offer assistance. In doing so, they learned of Wallace Elementary School in Hoboken, New Jersey.
 
While studying natural disasters, Hurricane Sandy provided a real-world connection for the students. They integrated this content into their writing curriculum and launched a two-week campaign to raise funds for Wallace Elementary School to replace some of the supplies that were lost during the storm.
