Recently, students from the Early Bird Club at Prospect Mill
Elementary School (PMES) had the privilege of visiting the lab of Dr. Carla
Dove, the world’s only forensic ornithologist, at the Smithsonian Institute. Dr.
Dove explained how she uses bird “snarge” to identify birds that have collided
with planes and how she shares her information with the Federal Aviation
Administration and airline manufacturers to make flying safer for everyone. She
also taught the students how to identify bird species by looking at their
